Home From the Stars

  1. HOME FROM THE STARS - An acrylic painting on an 11 x 14 illustration board. It was a private commission, a color version of a black and white drawing I did for my book, "The Best of Stephen Fabian". The title of that drawing is, "Burial in Space,"

The scene shows a Starship that has returned to Earth from deep space. Three crew members are placing their dead Captain in orbit, where he will circle the Earth for eternity.

The scene was inspired by a verse I read in Robert A. Heinlein's story, "Requiem". It appears in his book, "THE MAN WHO SOLD THE MOON". The verse begins with these lines, "On a high hill in Samoa there is a grave. Inscribed on the marker are these words written by Robert Louis Stevenson for his own epitaph" -

"Under the wide and starry sky
Dig me a grave and let me lie
Glad did I live and gladly die
And I lay me down with a will!

This be the verse which you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be,
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill."
